6 films to watch on Netflix this Valentine's Day
Who doesn't know the plot of My Best Friend's Wedding? This cult classic is perfect whether you're watching with your partner, best friends or children and explores the platonic friendship between Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) and Michael O'Neal (Dermot Mulroney) before she decides to do what we're all thinking and tries to sabotage it!
It may have only been around for just over one year however this hit period drama romance film is sure to become a classic and has received top ratings and reviews while also receiving multiple nominations for Best Picture, Screenplay and Actress. Brooklyn tells the story of a young Irish girl (Saoirse Ronan) who moves to Brooklyn, New York and quickly falls in love but must then choose between her new life and old life.
It spawned one of the most memorable love scenes in history and, 25 years later,Ghostis still revered as a classic. The plot, for the uninitiated, centres on young couple Molly (Demi Moore) and Sam (Patrick Swayze). When Sam is murdered by his business partner, he is forced to roam the earth as a ghost, trying to make contact with Molly via a medium to warn her of danger.
Chocolatcombines two things women love: chocolate and Johnny Depp. The film tells the charming story of Vianne (Juliette Binoche), a headstrong single mother who moves with her young daughter to a tranquil French town in 1959 to start a new life. When she opens a chocolate shop during Lent, she instantly attracts the ire of the town mayor, not to mention the attention of gypsy kindred spirit Roux (Depp). Nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture, it has unsurprisingly become a cult favourite. We like it best for its feminist values.
Eat Pray Lovestruck a chord with many when it was released in 2010. It tells the real-life story of Elizabeth Gilbert, a woman who appeared to have it all (a home, career and husband) but instead found herself increasingly dissatisfied with her life. An existential crisis leads her to travel the world, discovering the pleasure of eating in Italy, prayer in India and true love in Indonesia (courtesy of Javier Bardem).
From the same director as 2007 hitOncecomes another love story set within the music industry,Begin Again. Keira Knightley plays a heartbroken singer-songwriter who is discovered by a disgraced (and depressed) music executive, played by Mark Ruffalo. When the duo set out to work on a new album together, they start to rebuild their lives through the healing power of music.
