Are chance meetings better than set-ups?
So, while I'm busy trying to plot a cute encounter by writing rhyming couplets on napkins, I can be glaringly oblivious to the things going on around me.
Case in point: I was walking to dinner with two friends, when we noticed a lot of commotion on the street—fire trucks, police tape, etc. Like most New Yorkers, we stopped. Turned out a Laundromat had caught on fire, no one was hurt, a lot of people were gawking.
"What's going on?" A cute guy sidled up, touching my shoulder flirtatiously. We explained, he asked some questions, then I turned to my friends and asked if they were ready to go.
"He was flirting with you!" Melissa said once we walked out of earshot. "I can't believe you didn't notice!"
And, I didn't! So it makes me re-think all the times I think I'm trying to be flirty.
Anyway, maybe I'm a romantic, but I really do feel like if there was an honest-to-goodness spark I would have felt compelled to actually talk with him.
Then, I had a conversation with another friend about random encounters with guys, and she told me this story. She was coming out of the subway and also had a bad cold, so she was coughing. A guy tapped her on the shoulder and asked if she was okay. She said yes, then he noticed her tote bag, which was from a used bookstore. They started talking about books, and college, and it turns out they went to the same school, one year apart, even though they didn't know each other. They spoke for HALF AN HOUR in the cold, near the top of the subway steps, then exchanged numbers.
The next day, she got a text message:Feeling better? With a smiley face.
She responded:Not really, but I will soon...going to the doctor.
He responded:Good. Because I really want to sleep with you.
!!! That was the end of that. And, quite honestly, how sad, right? I mean, you think chance encounters never happen, then one does, and then he had to ruin it all with that text message?
And, in other news, I'm going to a singles event tonight. Details on Monday, but I am very nervous and skeptical.
