How to save onions?

It is safe to keep onions (both green and bulb, as well as leek) fresh not only in a private house with a cellar or cellar, but also in a regular apartment.

We will tell how to do it.

Onion preparation

Since different varieties manifest themselves differently during storage, it is necessary to initially divide the bulbs of different species. Thus, the bitter and sharp varieties of onions are much more easily tolerated for long-term storage, while the sweet onions are very unstable to diseases, and therefore more attention must be paid to it. In addition, it is desirable that the bulbs of the same size be stored together.

Carefully inspect each bulb - they should be ripe, without damage and dents, scales should be whole. And of course, the onion must be perfectly dry, otherwise it will rot. For this, the stocks are thoroughly dried before being stored. The most convenient way to do it is on the armor-clad net - it will be perfectly breathable and will not require you to take a special part in the process (you will not need to turn the bow often).

Store in the cellar

Optimal conditions for storing onions in the basement / cellar suggest a temperature of 0-3 degrees and a humidity of 75-90 percent.

It will be most convenient to put the bow in small boxes with holes for ventilation. To protect the onions from moisture, pour them with chalk (between layers). 200 grams of chalk will be enough for 10 kg of onion. If the humidity in the room is within the normal range, then the onion can simply be poured over with the husk - it will not allow the stocks to dry out. If the humidity is increased, then additional elements will have to be used to reduce it. For example, you can place in a room where onions are stored, containers with wood chips or ash, lime - these substances have excellent absorbent properties.

The height of the onion layers should not exceed 35 cm, otherwise the ventilation will be difficult.

Periodically sort out the onions (for example, once 1-1.5 months), because even the smallest rotten can in a while distort the entire box of winter stocks. If the bulbs for some reason have become damp, then they will need to be removed and thoroughly dried, and then sent back to storage.

You can also lay out onions on the shelves.Only then will one layer be enough and the bulbs will have to be turned over periodically.

We keep in the apartment

To maintain the onions in good condition in your apartment, ensure the temperature is not more than 18-22 degrees and humidity not more than 50-70 degrees.

To keep onions at home, take care of containers for storage. Best suited mesh, stockings. They need to be stored in a suspended state (for example, in the storage room) so that the ventilation is as good as possible.

If you do not want the onions to germinate, cut off the grown roots of the bulbs, and then treat the cut points with lime paste. You can buy it, for example, in a hardware store or in a store with products for agriculture. Just keep in mind that in spring you will not be able to grow green feathers from such bulbs.

How to store green onions and leeks?

To make stocks of green onions for the winter, you will need to sort it out, removing damaged feathers, wash and dry thoroughly. After that, onions can be either chopped or left in its original state. Next, move the feathers in plastic containers or special packages for freezing and place in the freezer. In this form, onions can last for a very, very long time, retaining their useful properties and taste.

If you need to save the onions for 7-10 days, then you need to wash it well, dry it and then put it in plastic bags or wrap in a towel and place it in the vegetables section of the refrigerator.

If we are talking about leek, then it should be kept exclusively in the refrigerator - the temperature and humidity presented there are optimal for it. This variety can be stored in the vegetable section of the refrigerator for 4-5 months. Seeing the dry skin, do not worry: if you remove it, then you will find all the same fresh and juicy middle. In a private house, leeks can be stored in the basement. To do this, it will need to be placed (vertically) in a container with sand.
