Ingrid Hoffman on Healthy Eating
"I used to embark on every single diet invented, but I couldn't sustain them," says Ingrid. "It was just a question of how fast I'd fall off the wagon." Her new attitude encourages moderation, allows treats, and avoids her personal trigger foods, such as processed flours and sugars. This way of eating is a boon not only to her waistline but also to her attitude and self-esteem. "Now I feel in control and empowered, and I don't need to binge."
Raised in Colombia and Curaçao (a small Dutch island off the coast of Venezuela) and now based in Miami, Ingrid finds endless inspiration for healthy cooking in the food of her childhood. "The fact that I get to work with Latin ingredients makes it easy," she says. "There are so many real and unprocessed foods to choose from: grains, chiles, beans, herbs." However, she describes her cuisine as global, with influences from Latin America, Spain and Asia. "Drawing inspiration from other cultures is a great way of making food healthy with flavor. I think my best friend in the kitchen is my spice cabinet."
Keeping aware of portions and sticking to healthier choices means Ingrid is able to control cravings, even though she works with food every day. And she's managed to not give up her favorite dishes. Scattered throughout the cookbook are indulgences, including burgers, creamy mashed potatoes and even fried chicken. An active lifestyle that includes biking, yoga and even paddleboarding also keeps her in her favorite pair of jeans.
